Power Rangers gets a dark, gritty reboot in 'Power/Rangers' short film

Adi Shankar produced a 'dark and gritty' reboot of the popular action series for kids in the '90s Power Rangers. The new fan film stars James Van Der Beek as Red Ranger Jason, Katee Sackhoff as Pink Ranger Kimberly and Russ Bain as Green Ranger Tommy.

The short film or 'bootleg' as Shankar calls it entitled Power/Rangers is the latest of his works. His other bootleg series include The Punisher: Dirty Laundry, Venom: Truth in Journalism and Judge Dredd: Superfiend.

In an interview with HitFix, Power/Rangers director Joseph Kahn explained that this stint is meant as a satire. "The dark and gritty reboot thing is such a cliché that the intention was not only to make it dark and gritty but make it even darker and grittier than you could possibly imagine, hence the brains, the blood and the violence and the sex," he said.

"Overall, it's a very serious thing. The joke isn't that you're laughing at each particular scene; the joke is that we did this 'f**k you' thing in the first place. You're going to look at it and you go wow I can't believe they f**king did that," Kahn continued.
